What are dental crowns?

A dental crown is a type of restoration that covers and protects a damaged or compromised tooth.  Your child may need a crown if their tooth is broken or cracked, has large decay that’s compromising the integrity of the tooth, or decay carrying to the pulp of the tooth.  At Junior Smiles, we offer silver stainless steel and white zirconia crowns. If your child does need a crown, Dr. Popper can review the benefits of each to help you make a well-informed decision for your child.

Why are dental crowns needed?

Crowns can be beneficial for a variety of reasons. They can be placed over virtually any and every tooth in the mouth. Some of the reasons your child may need a crown include:

  • Your child has a broken or cracked tooth
  • Your child has a large filling that is compromised
  • Your child recently had a pulpotomy
  • Your child’s tooth or teeth have large amounts of decay
  • Your child’s tooth or teeth have severe hypoplasia

Who is a good candidate for dental crowns?

With the help of an examination, we can help to determine if your child might need a dental crown.  The dental crown will allow your child to have a fully functional smile, fixing issues caused by broken or damaged teeth.

What happens during the dental crown procedure?

We start the process by administering a local anesthetic to numb the area. We then file down the tooth completely to make room for the new crown.  The crown is then placed and filed down to improve its fit and feel.

If you think your child might need a dental crown, and want to come in for the procedure, call our office today and we can help schedule you with an appointment!
